SOFIA-BERLIN, The Road to Europe

By Vladimir Andreev

“The Road to Europe” is a commonly used expression in Bulgaria these days. It has replaced another popular phrase of the past: “Bulgaro-Soviet Friendship”. For some, the road crosses the Bosphorus, for others it passes through Moscow. For many Bulgarians, however, “The Road to Europe” is a very real road that crosses Serbia, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Since air fares are completely inaccessible, and rail fares are still far too expensive, “The Road to Europe” is most often traveled by bus. One such bus trip is the feature of this film, where each traveler recounts his dreams, fears and desires as he heads toward the much coveted ‘Free’ Europe.
