Heart Of The Seal
By Tito González García
Since the 1980s, Western environmental movements have imposed strict regulations on seal hunting, upending Inuit cultural practices and societal organization. In Tasiilaq, the Greenlandic Jonathansen family and the French ethnologist couple Pierre and Bernadette Robbe, work together to preserve this culture. Filmed over several generations (from the 1960s to the present day), this documentary traces their shared commitment. Giving a voice to Inuit hunters and their descendants, it questions the evolution of the Inuit way of life, as well as our relationship with animal suffering in consumer societies. Westerners wanted to stand for ecology and the animal cause… but at what cost for the Inuit?
