No Kings

By Emilia Mello

In a place where conventional structures of authority fall away, a tomboy, a sea captain, a fiercely independent pregnant mother, and two wayward fishermen must find their place in the space between the urban and a traditional life threatened by impending forces. An ode to nature and human relations, No Kings explores the freedom of one of the last Caiçara communities. What begins as a simple ethnography becomes a deeply personal journey, contemplating the current direction of modern Brazil.

NO KINGS is a dynamic and poetic drift of a portrait, that feels guided by the romance of the idea that there are free enclaves that still exist.

MODERN TIMES

This first feature-length documentary from Mello is produced by filmmaker Roberto Minervini. And there is something of the intimate, lyrical approach of his films, particularly What You Gonna Do When The World’s On Fire, in this beguiling picture.

SCREEN DAILY

Mello’s free form, very much in the style of Jean Rouch, echoes the lifestyle of the Caiçaras. No Kings is unique in its poetic lyricism, and a reminder of just another loss of an ancient culture to the greed of the profit-orientated white race.
